built on textures, literally, figuratively and metaphorically. Thus, in my mind, Street/Documentary/Journalistic Photography, which by definition present an objective, true – through the photographer’s eye – recording of that split second also needs to show texture. Story telling is textured.
Too often I see wonderful photographs that have been filtered down to flat, textureless, lifeless nothing. It is impossible to discern differences between materials.
The textures in a photograph help the viewer to visually ‘touch and feel’, thus increasing his involvement, his understanding and his emotions in the story.
Perhaps strong graphics are now being confused with visual texture.
